LIFESTYLE AND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Ridgway State Park is a 2,320-acre park that includes 4 recreational areas and a reservoir. Ridgway's sandy swim beach, beach house and full-service marina make it a top choice for water sports enthusiasts with boating, scuba diving, waterskiing, windsurfing and swimming. With the completion of Ridgway Reservoir in 1987, the Uncompahgre River has developed into a superb tailwater fishery.

This catch and release fishery supports a healthy population of large rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout. If you're looking for big game, waterfowl and other wildlife, Ouray County has much to offer. Rafting opportunities also abound with the Gunnison River winding through Dominguez Canyon. Cottonwood stands provide nesting habitat for herons and songbirds, while deer, desert bighorn sheep and large game can be seen along the banks.

Covering more than three million acres in the central and southern Rocky Mountains, the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests afford opportunities for hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, climbing, horseback riding, camping and more.

Telluride Ski Resort features endless adventure on the slopes, a ski school, golf course and posh accommodations. Annual events like the Telluride BBQ Festival and Telluride Blues and Brews draw visitors to this famous resort town, as well.

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the Bridges at Black Canyon offers a traditional golf experience enriched by rock features, waterfalls, lakes and a variety of unique golf cart and foot bridges. Situated four miles from Ridgway, Divide Ranch and Club boasts an award-winning golf course and luxurious amenities wrapped up in the natural grandeur of the mountains and forest. Located in lovely Montrose, the Links at Cobble Creek features a challenging golf course, a state-of-the-art clubhouse and fitness center, gourmet restaurant, alpine scenery and fine homes.

HISTORY

Ridgway was named after the superintendent of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad. Ouray County was formed out of San Juan County in 1877 and named for Chief Ouray, a distinguished Ute Indian chief. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area economy was largely driven by mining. Today the chief industry is tourism, thanks to the close proximity of Telluride Ski Resort, captivating mountains, rivers and endless acres of public land.
